The 90's: All That and a Bag of Chips
The 90’s were so dope that we just can’t get enough of them! From the nostalgia of the music, TV shows, and the ongoing trends in fashion, it seems like the the decade is being revived all over again. As a 90’s kid, my entire adolescence was filled with the uniqueness that the time period brought: bright colors, hip-hop/pop, and my favorite, Nickelodeon TV.
I don’t know that it’s a proud declaration in today’s society, however, I’m not ashamed to say that I was raised by TV back then. Nickelodeon was such a cool innovation for kids, offering around the clock content specifically for kids. Out of all the shows though, my absolute favorite was Keenan and Kel (specifically Kel). Unbeknownst to him, Kel and I were married in my 9 year old mind, so it was basically true love. So, fast forward 20 years later, I was ecstatic to learn that my awesome city of Chicago would be hosting a 90’s bar crawl, hosted by Kel!
Like always, my first was thought, ‘What to Wear!?’ With crops and high waist mom jeans saturating retail stores now, my options were open. However, the vintage pieces give a much more authentic look in my opinion. I was able to find a Chicago gem that specializes in vintage 90’s style pieces, Ragstock of Wicker Park.
For outfit ideas, I’ve highlighted overalls with a cropped top with flatform sandals and a MTV sweater with cutoff shorts and creeper, thick soled sneakers. These choices remind me of the days of shopping at Old Navy, watching MTV’s TRL, and the Spice Girls. If those references don’t give 90’s nostalgia, I don’t know what else will.
In the end, I opted for a Nickelodeon themed tee which I cut into a crop, with high-waist jeans, a choker, mini backpack and Birkenstock sandals I even ran into some of friends who looked awesome with a 90’s windbreaker and a waist tied shirt. Though we are decades past the fun of the 90’s, I believe that it’s a time period that will never fade. Thanks for the memories!
